Stephen John Brooking - Sculptor and Teacher (among many other things..) 1956 - 2021

I wanted to start off my blog again by showing you some of Stephens artwork. He very rarely exhibited his ceramics and other work but he was an amazing sculptor as well as an excellent art tutor. He was also a dear, dear man whom I miss every day. As I start my own practice again after a long break, I am using some of his tools and materials. I feel like he is encouraging me and telling me that I can do it, even though he is not physically here to consult or guide me.

Stephen was also good at making things on the wheel and I have lots of bowls and dishes which I use all the time some of which are pictured also.

Close to home...

I have work at two local venues this month...

StoryKeepers and Rabbitmen are going to be on show during an exciting evening event curated by the Good on Paper magazine as part of the Stroud Fringe Festival
On my Facebook page I have posted info about the other local artists who will be there (their work looks amazing).

And

Dotty O'Bracket and friends are in the Letter as Art printmaking exhibition at the Museum in the Park, Stroud. The PV is on Sunday 7th August at 5pm. During the day I am helping to run a 'drop in' family workshop which should be fun. The university have lent us some fabulous large wooden letterpress type to print/play with...

The Ladies of Twose

This is the 2nd book I made for the Open Studio event for Stroud Artist's Book Club. It is a small concertina book with a little limerick at the beginning and was also created from a series of my collagraph prints.

SWIM with Dotty O'Bracket

For the last two weekends the Stroud Artists' Books group has been taking part in the Open Studios event at the SVA. There were a great many visitors and it was lovely to speak to some of them while I was stewarding. Some people were quite knowledgeable about Artists' Books and some had some had never heard of them. I think we recruited a few new members too.
I created two new little books in time for the event and sold quite a few. The images in both were taken from collagraphs which I made a while ago, when working on the prints for the 20:20 Exchange.

SWIM with Dotty O'Bracket is an accordian book with
a little poem and printed and hand-coloured elements. 12.5cms x 11cms when closed (66cms opened out).

I'll photograph the other book today and show you that in the next post.
